Southgate Shopping Centre is a 17,000 m² mixed-use development by KMD Architecture and contracted by John Sisk & Son that consists of office space, residential apartments and retail space that opens onto the street. The main corporate tenants include Dunnes Stores and Coca-Cola.
Working from pencil drawn sketches, we worked with the concept designer to develop a state-of-the-art canopy that would provide an aesthetic shelter for the pedestrian streetscape. Once the design intent was agreed upon, we developed detailed structural designs that were incorporated into the structure and fabric of the building followed by tests and a full-size mockup. The final product was a combination of bespoke anodised extrusions which were structurally bonded to glass and connected to an intricately profiled timber trimmed steel support system.
The canopy that we developed is the first of its kind in Ireland. It is the only canopy that features an open glass roof, providing shelter to pedestrians and creating a striking design. This unique canopy has gained widespread acclaim and has become a distinguishable feature of this successful development.
